'Tired' Messi steals the show

Calcutta: If the morning sun tells you how a day will unfold, then Lionel Messi’s first practice in the city could only augment the mercury in an already hot barometer. The high point of the session was when Messi belligerently controlled a cross off Angel di Maria with his chest, only to bring the ball down to fire a salvo off his left foot. The Simbolo (the official ball of the match) got past second goalkeeper Mariano Andujar, but only ended in shaking the bar. Despite not being in his usual self (because of jet lag) where he would dodge and dribble past defenders to leave them in a tizzy, Messi did not fail to mesmerise in his first training session in the city.

Failed strike at Attwood Brass Works foundry stokes union sentiment in Grand ...

Although the city’s most well-known union moment was the unsuccessful four-month furniture workers strike of 1911, another lesser-known strike took place in Grand Rapids 26 years later at the Attwood Brass Works foundry, which history has largely... Workers swelled the streets in 1886 to celebrate the first May Day in step with larger cities after securing the eight-hour day at nine-hour pay from local furniture manufacturers, Johnston said. NW, Attwood Brass Works, at the foot of the historic Sixth Street Bridge, was occupied in early March 1937 by workers who barricaded themselves inside the plant for four days in an unsuccessful United Auto Workers organization bid. GRAND RAPIDS — Despite West Michigan’s reputation as a bastion of conservatism, local labor historian Michael Johnston wants folks to remember that Grand Rapids was first and foremost a union city.

What Is a Barometer

The mercury barometer works by balancing the weight of the mercury against the atmospheric pressure (or weight of the air). If the mercury is lighter than the air pressure the mercury level will rise in the barometer. If the mercury is heavier than the air pressure the mercury will fall in the barometer. Mercury Barometers: Mercury barometers consist of a glass tube that is sealed at one end and open at the other. This tube is filled with mercury and sits upside down in a reservoir which holds more mercury. If the mercury falls this is an indication of low atmospheric pressure usually signaling a change to wet, windy weather. There are three main types of barometers, mercury barometers, water-based barometers and aneroid barometers. A barometer measures the change in pressure in the atmosphere which occurs when the weather pattern changes....

On This Day in Science History - October 25 - Torricelli Barometer

He reasoned the falling mercury created a vacuum inside the top of the tube and the force preventing the remaining liquid from pouring out came from the weight of the column of air above the bowl of mercury. When he removed his finger, the mercury in the tube would pour into the bowl and then stop suddenly near the 3/4 full mark. He was the first to create the mercury barometer to measure air pressure. He then closed the open end with his finger and submerged the end into a bowl of mercury. He created glass tubes approximately a meter long and closed at one end which he filled with mercury. He was investigating the existence of a vacuum using mercury as a pump....
